Description

Talking about curling up, I created an art about cats curling up for a contest by EmbracingOurDifferences.org in January. I planned to upload it on DA when there's a news whether it's one of the runner ups or not. The chosen ones should be announced in mid February and so far I didn't get the notification, so I guess my work was not one of them.

Mixed media: Oil pastels, black marker, correction pen on A3 paper.

My "artist's statement", limited to 200 words:

I'm not the best peace advocate out there as I don't really believe humans can really embrace omni-differences because if that happened there would be injustice, but maybe it's about different context. Now about this painting, personally I love how cats often found gathering like this, just by looking at them napping in one spot most likely would make a therapeutic sight for everyone, so I think for EOD theme this would be a good message.

But this is more about 'neutral' differences: shapes, size, markings, age, etc. While these attributes also present in humans, human life is much more complex than that so what's deemed as 'neutral' by one culture/one person may not be perceived so by the others.

In the end everyone will be doing anything they think is right (like this EOD event) and I'm no exception. When it comes to differences in significant values I wont hesitate to stand for it, for what I think is right. But this painting is my way of looking at neutral differences that actually enrich life, that can coexist peacefully, having the same home as comfortable as a cozy mat. And still everyone else may look at it differently.

What I really wanted to say in the "artist's statement" if the characters were not limited:

I'm not the best peace advocate out there as I don't really believe humans can really embrace omni-differences because if that happened there would be injustice, but maybe it's about different perspective or context. Now about this painting (mixed media on A3 paper), personally I love how cats often found gathering like this, just by looking at them napping together in one spot most likely would make a therapeutic sight for everyone, so I think for "Embracing Our Differences" theme this would be a good message.

But in my personal opinion this is more about differences that can be perceived as 'neutral' like expressed in the cats: shapes, size, colors/markings. While these attributes also present in humans, human life is much more complex than that so what's deemed as 'neutral' by one culture or one person may not be perceived so by the others.

One might have some ideal vision that "differences must be embraced" and so on but still everybody might have different interpretation of the same idea.  This ideal would just be one idea among many other different potentially conflicting ideas.. that would demand to be equally accepted and so on, ad infinitum. (You get what I mean?)

In the end everyone will be doing anything they think is right (like this "embracing our differences" event) and I'm of course no exception. When it comes to differences in values I feel significant I wont hesitate to stand for it, for what I think is right. But this painting is my way of looking at neutral differences that actually enrich life, that absolutely can coexist peacefully, having the same home as comfortable as a soft, cozy mat. And still everyone else may look at it/interpret it differently. ;)
